Wintersport in Canada
We're good at wintersports. We should be, we're snowed in and freezing our butt half the year. We're good at having fun in the winter. And we have lots of ways to get warmed up afterwards. Winter if fun in Canada.

Canada's Official National Wintersport is Hockey. It is played at every level, from neighbourhood teams, minor league, school and university teams, to major league teams. My favorite National Hockey League team is the Toronto Maple Leafs, our son's team is the Montreal Canadians and my husband is the smart one, he does not get involved in picking a team, he likes them all. Besides being the best in the world in ice hockey, we're also pretty good at figure skating, and Canada has skaters participating in the Olympics and World Championships for years. Both men's and ladies figure skating as well as pairs and dance couples represent Canada at international competitions. It all starts at the local arena where small children "Learn to Skate". Long track and the very exciting short track speed skating are growing in popularity thanks to competitors like Catriona Le May Doan, Cindy Klassen and Marc Gagnon. Don't forget Curling, we do that all the time also. They even made a movie about it, Men with Brooms. Canada is always the team to beat in International competitions. We ski downhill and cross country over lakes and through the forests, we even take a helicopter to the top of the mountains and then ski all the way down to the lodge to warm up with a nice hot drink. Sometimes we do we target practice with a gun while we are skiing. We do aerials and moguls to make wintersports even more exciting. Snowboard competitions are held across Canada. Canadian Ross Rebagliati won the Giant slalom in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. From February 12-28, 2010 Canada will host the Olympic Winter Games. The Vancouver 2010 mission is to touch the soul of the nation and inspire the world by creating and delivering an extraordinary Olympic and Paralympic experience with lasting legacies. The vision is to build a stronger Canada whose spirit is raised by its passion for sport, culture and sustainability. If you are not into Olympics or organized winter sports, there is lots of other stuff to do. Get some friends together and go ice fishing. Nothing beats a sun-filled day out on a lake ice fishing and enjoying the winter wonderland.
