Tourism in Canada
Tourism is a sixty billion dollar industry in Canada. The landscape is diverse, and so are Canada’s attractions. The Rocky Mountains in the West, the rugged coastline in the East, the prairies in Alberta, picturesque villages and big metropolitan cities, and nature’s wonders every where. Canada has it all.

The Aboriginal people in Canada are the Indians, or First Nations people, and the Inuit. The rest of us are here because we, or our ancestors, came from another country and made this our home. At some time or another, we visited Canada. And Canada is still visited by people from all over the world. According to StatsCan from 2001 to 2005 between 36 and 47 million visitors entered Canada each year.
The first visitors to Canada were explorers and settlers in the 16th century. They arrived by ship and traveled inland by canoe.
In 1872 it took Sir Sanford Fleming three months by oxcart, horse and boat to cross Canada (Toronto – Victoria). After 1885 the railway brought coast to coast travel time to about a week. Now you can fly from coast to coast in less than a day. If you like to discover Canada by car, then the
Trans Canada Highway
from St John, New Brunswick to Victoria, British Columbia is the perfect venue. If you prefer the pioneer ways, take a canoe trip down one of the century old traditional routes used by the native people. Take the greatest canoe trip in the world, the South Nahanni River in the North West Territories. Or spend a week at a dude ranch, either as a working dude, or as a guest.
If you like buildings, discover Canada’s Architecture. See the simplest, yet most sophisticated dwelling, the Igloo, built by the Inuit, who, equipped with only a snow knife, created a structure in which they could live comfortably. Or explore the province of Quebec, where the earliest survivor of the gothic architecture style is the
Notre-Dame Church in Montreal.
If your interest is Paleontology, visit the
Burgess Shale
in Yoho National Park where tiny, bizarre sea monsters from the Cambrian Period (600 - 480 million years ago) were discovered. Or the world’s richest storehouse of dinosaur fossils in Alberta’s Red Deer River Valley. Wild life watching: The killer whales (Orcas) in Johnstone Strait between Vancouver Island and the BC mainland, the polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba, the spectacular Puffin Colony at Witles Bay in Newfoundland, or hear the wolves howl in the 7725 square kilometer Algonquin Park in Ontario. If you are a tourist who likes excitement and adventure, take a white rafting trip along one of the rivers, or go helicopter skiing. Multicultural: See the Mennonites and Amish people in rural South Western Ontario and buy their delicious wares at the
St Jacobs Farmers Market.
Any tourist will enjoy Caribana, the Caribbean Festival of music, sound and sight. Drink lots of beer at Oktoberfest, Canada’s largest Bavarian festival while enjoying your stay in Kitchener, or be mesmerized by one of the many colorful Powwows at aboriginal festivals throughout the country. Theatre and Arts. See the world finest art at the National Gallery of Canada, enjoy Shakespeare at the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, or feel the passion of Canada’s aboriginal people in their art. Enjoy the natural wonders of the falls while you stay in one of Niagara Falls' hotels, or travel to Toronto and visit the CN Tower, one of the worlds man made wonders. From world class entertainment and shopping in the major cities like Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, to pure wilderness exploration, it is here, for you to see and do in Canada.
