Financial and Medical Assistance

after leaving the hospital

Do You Need More Cash?

Here is my experience with the financial and medical assistance I received after I was released from the hospital.

You might have seen Sicko by Micheal Moore, a film about the American Health Care System. In this film he has a segment about a Canadian man loosing his fingers and how the surgery to re-attach them was paid for by the Canadian Medi Care System.

Since I immigrated to Canada I have had lots of experience with the Canadian Health Care System. At one time I had 9 surgeries in a two year period, with lots of medical assistance during recovery and home care.

My latest experience was after a severe leg infection. I was in the hospital for several weeks and then send home on what is called "homecare". My experience was in the province of Ontario, and might be different from other provinces. Medical assistance and Home care is available to any person with a valid Ontario Health Card. No extra insurance is needed. We do not pay for our Government Health Insurance.

When you leave the hospital and you are in need of continued care, nurses and a personal care assistant will come to your home. If your home needs to be adjusted for safety, a health care specialist will come to your home and help you decide which adjustments need to be made to make your home safer. The suggestions might be bathroom handles, extra railings etcetera.

If you need personal care, then an assistant will come in once a week to help you get a bath or shower.

If you need medical procedures, a nurse will come and visit you as many times as needed and prescribed by the doctor.

If you need medication, by mouth or Intra Venous, and you don't have insurance for drugs, you will receive a homecare medication card that pays for all your medicine. This card is valid for as long as you receive "Home Care".

My last experience was as follows: I went to the hospital by ambulance (no charge), not feeling well. I had developed a severe leg infection and was put on intravenous medication, send home with an IV and put on Home Care. All medication, including the hardware needed to run the IV, was supplied free of charge, as were the visits by the nurses. After a few days the infection worsened, I called the ambulance to go back to the hospital, and for this trip I was charged $ 45.

After several weeks in hospital I was send home on medication and twice weekly dressing changes. A health care specialist came to check our house to make sure it was safe. She suggested we install bathroom handlebars. No charge for the consultation, the cost for two handlebars was under $ 40.00. I am on antibiotics, and this is paid for by the Home Care Card, including any other medication I need.

Twice a week the nurse comes to change my dressings. All supplies, bandages, ointment and such is paid for, no cost at all to me. After my leg is healed, and I do not need nurses anymore, but needed help with personal care, a personal care assistant will come in once a week to help me take a bath. No cost to me.

Years ago while I was on Homecare, I also received free house cleaning services, but that is no longer supplied.

Overall, I think the financial and medical assistance I received is excellent. If you have no extra medical insurance at all, you still receive the same care as anyone else who has extra coverage. And while you are on Homecare, even your drugs are paid for.

Your Homecare medication card will not be valid once you are no longer on Homecare services. If you don't have a drug plan, financial medical assistance is available from the Ontario Government. The Trillium Drug Program (TDP) is intended for Ontario residents who have a valid Ontario Health Card and who have high prescription drug costs in relation to their net household income.
