My Canadian Immigration Experience

I was born in the Netherlands. I was a quiet kid and loved to read, especially books about Canada, where they had cottages, and lots of trout fishing. Where the roads are "washed out" after heavy rains. It all looked very romantic and adventurous. So, at 23 years of age I decided to leave my parents and 7 brothers and sisters behind, and start the Canadian immigration process. I phoned the Canadian Embassy and took it from there. They interviewed me, I had to go for a health test, finalize my financial affairs with the tax people and 6 weeks later I got my VISA in the mail. Nowadays it takes quite a bit longer.

A year later I met my husband Frank. He came here as a foreign exchange student on an agricultural program, he decided to apply for immigration from within Canada. We married and 9 years after arriving in Canada we became Canadian Citizens. Since then we have hosted many exchange students and have helped some of them to become landed immigrants also. We've helped people get temporary work permits, we’ve offered employment to immigrants and we have hosted university students. Several of them are now happy Canadian Citizens with good jobs or their own successful business.
